Originally a red-overlayed Japan-exclusive from 2004, a new Urawa-themed Air Max 1 made its long-awaited return in 2023. Kind of like the first release was a home jersey colorway and this one is the away. I’d wanted these when they dropped but never pulled the trigger — fast forward to 2025, and Nike surprise restocked them on their site and knocked the price down. No brainer.
This colorway pays tribute to the Urawa Red Diamonds, a top-tier Japanese football club, and pulls its look from the team’s traditional kits. The upper features a clean mix of Pure Platinum, White, and Black, accented by small, sharp pops of red. The overall shape looks nice and sleek on foot, a key element to a great pair of Air Max 1s.
One of the standout details here is the eel graphic printed on the insole and embroidered on the heel. It’s not random — the eel is a symbol tied to both the Urawa Reds and their hometown of Saitama, which is known for eel cuisine and even has the eel in local iconography. It’s a subtle nod, but super unique and something you won’t see on just any GR.
This restock came in a standard orange Nike box and includes plain white flat laces.
Materials
Material-wise, the sneaker features nubuck overlays and tongue, a leather Swoosh, and mesh underlays. While it’s not dripping in premium textures, the construction feels solid and thoughtful. Easily earns the “Premium” tag with the balanced material mix and detailed touches.
Fit & Comfort
Fit is classic Air Max 1: true to size, a little snug on top at first, but overall very wearable and comfy for daily rotation. Cushioning is standard Air Max — nothing crazy, but good enough.
If these are sold out online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
